Game Recap

Friday night was the annual Hoopcoming event at Scottsdale Christian Academy featuring the return of several prominent basketball alums for the annual alumnit game that preceded the the final home game of the season and the traditional Senior night festivities honoring players from the Class of 2017.

SCA would face the Joy Christian Eagles for the second time this season looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 8-0 in Metro West Region play. Despite a slow start falling behind 15-9 at the end of the 1st period, SCA put together a strong run to end the first half led by Junior Eddie Cordona who hit two big threes to end the first half to put SCA on top 27-25 at the intermission.

In the second half it was all SCA as the Eagles outscored Joy Christian 42-20 in the en route to a resounding 69-45 victory. Seniors Robbie Witte, Jack Richards and Zac Lane were all honored prior to the game and all had great perfomances on the night! 6’5″ Forward Robbie Witte was finally able to return following a hand injury that had sidelined him the entire season and contributed a big rebound to start the game and was able to break into the scoring column from the FT line. Forward Jack Richards and Zac Lane really went out in style in their final game in the SCA gym with both players registering double/doubles in scoring and rebounding. Lane had 13 points and a whopping 18 rebounds while Richards contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds for a terrific and memorable night for both players!

SCA had 2 additional players in double digit scoring led by Sophomore Reed Myers who contributed 16 points and Sophomore Ethan Spry adding 10 points.

It was a great win and great night celebrating the rich and storied history of Scottsdale Christian Basketball! SCA will finish the regular season with road games next Tuesday at Scottsdale Prep and then on Friday at Phoenix Christian.

Thank you Seniors ! Zac, Jack and Robbie!

Game Recap

The SCA Men’s Varsity took on the upstart and revamped Rancho Solano Mustangs on Wednesday a night, a team featuring several new club level Freshmen players as well as a key transfer Junior PG from Chaparral that has been making some noise in 2A all season long.

The Mustangs came in prepared and ready for the Eagles early as their defense along with a cold SCA shooting spell gave Rancho an 11-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, the Eagles started to hit their stride and put up 21 points in the quarter to cut the Rancho lead to 25-21 at the intermission. SCA went on to outscore the Mustangs 14-7 in the third and took their first lead of the game on a Reed Myers 3 pointer to put the Eagles up 35-32. In the 4th, clutch points from mid range and in the paint by Ethan Spry kept the Eagles in and in the final seconds of regulating with SCA down 44-41, Reed Myers hit a huge 3 pointer that sent the game to overtime 44-44 as time was expiring.

In the first overtime, both teams traded scores but neither could pull away and the game went into the 2nd overtime knotted 51-51. The second overtime was much of the same except the Eagles found themselves down 55-53 with 20 seconds to play. In the final seconds, Ethan Spry set a perfect pin down screen for Reed Myers who took the hand off and knocked down a huge 3 to put the Eagles ahead 56-55. Rancho Solano had one last chance but a drive by Mustang Freshman Kimani Holt was defended well and his last second shot fell well off the mark off thus sealing a thrilling victory for Scottsdale Christian, 56-55.

The Eagles were led by Sophomore co-captains Reed Myers (17 points) and Ethan Spry (15 points). SCA improved to 13-8 overall and 12-3 in power point games.
