The Scottsdale Christian Eagles men’s basketball team traveled to Fountain Hills Monday night to open their 2019 play and face the division 3a Falcons. The Eagles entered the game with an 8-4 record, 2-0 in league play while the Falcons entered the game 4-8.
The Eagles offense put their tournament struggles behind them while their defense held their ground against the Falcons outside shooters. The Eagles offense got off the ground with an inside bucket from senior forward Ethan Spry and an open three-pointer from senior Jake Mitchell taking an early 5-0 lead, a lead they would never give up. Senior point guard Reed Myers pressured the Falcon defense, finding open shooters like junior guard Jordan Moody who hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Eagles took a 16-7 lead into the second.
The second quarter saw much of the same as SCA extended their lead. Spry would lead the Eagles offense in scoring with 11 second quarter points (14 in the half) while Moody added another 3-pointer in the quarter (9 pts in the half). Senior forward Luke Swetonic contributed significant minutes defending and rebounding along with junior Darius Whitson, sophomore Matthew Fan and senior Ryan Witte. The Eagles defense held the Falcons to just 19 first half points and entered halftime with a 32-19 lead.
Myers continued to find open teammates in the second half and the Eagles moved the ball well around the Falcons zone defense getting easy shots. Moody added a couple more threes to his night while Spry controlled the middle with 8 points in the quarter. Swetonic added three hard fought points in the paint. SCA extended their lead and entered the fourth up 49-30.
More Myers assists, more three-pointers from Moody, Fan and Whitson, and 6 points from Spry and the Eagles emptied their bench, cruising to a 72-49 victory.
The Eagles placed two scorers in double figures. Spry finished the night with 28 points (10-14 fg) and 17 rebounds, (9 offensive). Moody added 21 points on 7 three-pointers. Myers found open teammates, dropping 9 assists. Swetonic, Whitson, Fan, Mitchell and Witte all contributed valuable minutes on both ends of the court.
