The Metro West champion Scottsdale Christian Eagles men’s basketball team began their state tournament journey Friday night in Prescott at Yavapai College against the Morenci Wildcats. The Wildcats brought a 19-11 overall record to the contest having won 9 of their last 10. The Eagles entered the contest 19-6 overall.
Senior forward Tanner Hoffman and Sophmore guard Jordan Moody would both suit up having missed part of January due to injury.
With their three top scorers on the floor, senior guard Jacob Kaites putting in a terrific performance at point guard and additional three point shooting by senior guard Eddie Cardona, the Eagles would run away with a 24 point victory.
The game began with two quick threes by Moody and a putback by Metro West POY junior forward Ethan Spry giving the Eagles a lead they would never lose. Senior guard and three point threat, Eddie Cardona, added a three to the Eagle offense. Moody would finish the first quarter with 4 three-pointers giving the Eagles a 21-14 lead.
Hoffman held the Eagles offense afloat in the second quarter with 5 points. Senior Sam McClue and sophmore Darius Whitson added tough defensive performances in the quarter where the Eagles would hold the Wildcats to just 9 points.
The Eagles offense returned to form in the third quarter as they expanded their lead. Moody would connect on another 2 three pointers while Spry and Cardona added 5 each in the quarter which ended with the Eagles on top 58-36.
Coach Fredericks would empty his bench in the fourth quarter as the Eagles coasted to a 72-48 victory. Moody lead all scorers with 18, connecting on 6 three pointers. Cardona finished with 15 points including 3 three pointers. Spry would add 9 points in just 7 minutes of play while Hoffman and Kaites contributed 7.
Senior Jacob Kaites played his best game of the year leading the Eagles both on and off the court. Assuming the point guard responsibilities, Kaites quarterbacked the Eagles offense and defended the Wildcat guards into frustration.
Tonight the Eagles will face Rancho Solano in the 2a State quarterfinals. Make the drive and come support your Eagles!
