Your 6-0 Scottsdale Christian Eagles men’s basketball team traveled to Horizon High School Thursday afternoon to participate in the annual Horizon Hoop Holiday Invitational tournament and faced a physical 4a Tempe Buffaloes in the first round.
The Eagles offense started the game firing on all cylinders, opening the game with threes from Junior guard Jordan Moody and Senior point guard Reed Myers. Myers pushed the ball on offense pressuring the Tempe defense to quickly find their man, but they were often too late. Moody connected on 3 three-pointers, finishing with 9 points for the quarter. Junior forward Ethan Spry scored 7 points including a three and the Eagles took a 23-17 lead into the second.
The Eagles continued to pressure the Buffalo defense both in the full court and half court of the second quarter adding another 18 points to the scoreboard led by Spry who had 12 points in the quarter including 2 three-pointers. The Eagles man-to-man defense pressured shots and rebounded holding the Buffaloes to 28 in the half and the Eagles ended the half on top 41-28. The Eagles were led in scoring at the half by Spry with 19 points, Moody with 9 points and Myers with 5 points.
The pace of the game slowed in the beginning of the third as both teams struggled to find a rhythm. Eagle guard Jordon Moody, for the second time in the game, caught fire mid-way in the third connecting on 3 three-pointers, scoring 11 in the quarter. The Eagles entered the final quarter with a 52-34 lead where they slowed their offense and focused on running time off the clock, finishing on top 55-43. The Eagles extended their undefeated record to 7-0.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Moody who finished with 20 points. Spry had his fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Myers added 7 assists and Junior forward Darius Whitson added 4 assists. Sophomore guard Matthew Fan, Senior forward Luke Swetonic, and Senior guard Ryan Witte all contributed valuable minutes to their teams victory.
