Scottsdale Christian Academy traveled to Cottonwood Thursday night for a non-regional matchup against the 4a Mingus Union Marauders. The Eagle would have to play without two of their starters, Jordan Moody (Achilles strain) and Zack Curtis (concussion).
Tanner Hoffman got the Eagles off to a quick start scoring 6 first quarter points, but overall the SCA offense sputtered against the Mingus zone and the Eagles found themselves down 12-17 at the end of one.
The second quarter saw a barrage of three pointers from the Marauders guards who scored 27 points in the quarter. Mingus Union took an 18 point lead into the locker room, 44-26, a deficit the Eagles would not be able to overcome.
Tanner Hoffman finished the half with 14 points while Ethan Spry contributed 7 on 7-8 free throws.
SCA’s defense clamped down in the third quarter with Josh Phillips disrupting the perimeter shooting and dribble drives of the marauders. The offense also heated up, cutting the lead to 12, lead by three 3-pointers from Eddie Cardona and Daniel Berg. The Eagles were able to cut the lead to three early in the fourth, 54-57, but a series of turnovers put the game back out of reach as the Eagles lost their fourth game of the season.
Hoffman finished the game with 19 points, Spry finished with 17 (9-10 free throws) and Eddie Cardona added 16.
Friday night will see your Eagles in an important regional matchup at Scottsdale Prep Academy at 7pm.
