The SCA Eagles men’s basketball team’s season and state tournament run ended Saturday night as the Eagles lost a hard fought defensive battle to the Rancho Solano Mustangs 45-39. The two teams had met once before on January 24th when the Mustangs defeated a hobbled SCA team by 17 points. Senior forward Tanner Hoffman and sophomore shooting guard Jordan Moody, both being previously injured, would play Saturday night. The Eagles entered the game with a 19-7 overall record and seeded 5th in the tourney. The Mustangs who are heavy favorites to win the 2A state title, brought a 25-5 overall record and 4th seed to the tourney.

The Eagles jumped out to a 14-13 lead to close the first quarter led by junior forward Ethan Spry with 4 points in the quarter. Moody and senior guard Jacob Kaites would both add threes. However, the SCA offense would sputter in the second quarter only scoring 6 points against a tough Rancho defense. Hoffman would have 5 points in the quarter as the Eagles went into halftime down 24-20.

SCA would cut the lead to 2 by the end of the third with the help of 6 points from Moody, a three by Spry and another bucket by sophomore Darius Whitson. But as the Mustang defense clamped down, the Eagles would only manage 9 points in the fourth, 5 for Kaites and 4 for Hoffman, which would not be enough to close the gap as the Eagles closed their season with the 45-39 loss.

Hoffman would lead the Eagles as the only player in double figures with 11 points.

The Eagles closed their season 19-8 and Metro West champions for the second year in a row.
