The SCA Middle School Varsity Girls Basketball team, led by Coach Chuck Watkins and Kelsey Hughes, faced off against the well-coached Fountain Hills Falcons in Fountain Hills on Wednesday.
This was the first game where the Eagles faced an opponent that had the sort of physical accomplishments and fundamental skills to provide a competitive challenge to SCA’s team, and the Eagles responded. Led by outstanding defensive performances from Trinity Sloan (#34) on the help side, Brooke Hancock (#22) in deny posture, and Baylee Tobin (#24) and Lily Richardson (#21) in steals, the Scottsdale team stifled a tough passing attack from the Falcons.
Daphne Garland (#40) and Sophia Lane (#42) successfully demonstrated the use of the V-cut to get open on the perimeter, while Natalie Scherzer (#23) was accurate from distance. Renee Chester (#3) and Allyson Lund (#20) were active on the perimeter defense, and Sedona Nuessle (#32) was perfect from the foul line. With Ana Faustinos (#50) willing to penetrate, and Carrie Meyer (#44) making good entry passes, the Eagles eeked out a win despite a wild final two minutes.
