The SCA Varsity Middle School Girls hosted the ever-dangerous Horizon Honors squad on Tuesday night, and the action kicked off in full gear right away with Horizon pressing and moving the ball well against the SCA zone.
Horizon jumped out to a large lead as SCA struggled; attempting to dribble out of the full-court press, driving into the teeth of the zone, and taking ill-advised three-point shots. Ana Faustinos (#50) calmed the team with some good work on the perimeter, and Sophia Lane (#42) moved the ball well in and out of the high post, but with Natalie Scherzer (#5) in foul trouble early, the team leaned on Brooke Hancock (#22) to shore up the defense and prevent a rout.
Gradually the Eagles began to pass the ball with greater accuracy, and Lily Richardson (#21), Sedona Nuessle (#32) and Trinity Sloan (#34) earning the hard points at the free throw line, SCA went into half-time down 20-10.
In the second half the game turned around with the introduction of Daphne Garland (#40), whose outstanding work in the full-court press stifled the Horizon attack, and Baylee Tobin (#30), who swept up the pieces as loose Horizon passes came over the top. With Trinity Sloan’s key jumpers down the stretch, and Sedona Nuessle profiting with easy baskets off press turnovers, SCA scratched their way back from a big deficit to win in the final minutes of a thrilling game.
