The Scottsdale Christian Eagles hosted JOY for their final home game of the 2018 Middle School Varsity Girls’ season in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators.
After a long stretch away from the basketball court to visit Washington and California, the SCA squad looked a little rusty and perhaps nervous, but early buckets, strong inside from Trinity Sloan (#34) and outside from Natalie Scherzer (#23), settled the nerves. The JOY team struggled to overcome the press in the back-court and the trap in the front court, with Sedona Nuessle (#32) and Lily Richardson (#21) making steals and starting the break to pile up the points.
With the introduction of Allyson Lund (#20), Ana Faustinos (#50) and Daphne Garland (#40), the high-pressure defense leading to easy breakaways continued at pace, as the team relied upon excellent weak side and back side help from Brooke Hancock (#22) and Baylee Tobin (#24) to close out the low post.
In the second half, Renee Chester (#3) began to paint the sky with basketballs, pulling the trigger from mid-range, and Sophia Lane (#42) demonstrated some energetic defense against the JOY interior players. Carrie Meyer (#44) cleaned up the rebounds, and the Eagles went into their final regular season game carrying no visible injuries and with a healthy workout prior to Tuesday’s long trip to face the other VCSL undefeated Varsity Girls team, Gilbert Christian.
