The SCA Middle School Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled down to Agritopia to take on the Gilbert Christian Knights for their final regular-season game of the season on Tuesday afternoon.
Excited for the showdown with the other main competitor for the top seed in the VCSL tournament, the Eagles were tight and nervous to begin the first half. Trinity Sloan (#34) shone for SCA in the low post, boxing out, rebounding, scoring, and making key blocks and steals against the Knights. With Lily Richardson (#21) and Natalie Scherzer (#23) directing traffic, the Eagles used the ball carefully and well in the half-court offense, but the lid was on the basket for anyone other than these ball handlers, Sedona Nuessle (#32) and Trinity Sloan, and the Eagles went into the half down 18-13.
In the second half, Brooke Hancock (#22) began to break out, rebounding on the defensive end and going coast-to-coast several times to score powerfully in the power slot. Daphne Garland’s (#40) individual defensive efforts were a highlight, Trinity Sloan continued to own and operate the low post, and Carrie Meyer (#44) also made some key rebounds. Bree Tobin (#24) made several important blocks as the Eagles’ defense improved to limit the Knights to 13 points in the half, and Renee Chester (#3) got a good look at the basket. Coach Watkins introduced Allyson Lund (#20), Ana Faustinos (#50), and Sophia Lane (#42) to the fray, but the effort was not enough, and SCA suffered their first defeat of the season in an exciting match.
All eyes turn to SCA for the VCSL playoffs on Saturday.
