Your #1 ranked Scottsdale Christian Eagles men’s basketball team capped off an extraordinary 2a State Tournament run Saturday night at the Gila River Arena in Gilbert, AZ by defeating the #2 ranked Alchesay Falcons, 72-41, to become the 2019 2a Men’s Basketball State Champions!
The state title is the 7th state championship for head coach Bob Fredericks and SCA basketball, the third for assistant coach John Anderson, the third for assistant coach Paul Clark and the second for senior captains, forward Ethan Spry and point guard Reed Myers, who won as freshman starters on the 2016 SCA state title team. The game was the final for both senior captains in an SCA uniform and they each absolutely balled out!
The “6th man” 5,000 person fan base of Alchesay combined with several thousand additional fans from Holbrook and Winslow who also cheered for Alchesay played little or no role in the game as the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never allowed the game to be close or the Alchesay fans to be a factor. The Eagles executed their offense and got easy shots out of the gates. Spry started the game with a basket, followed by a three from junior captain, guard Jordan Moody. Then back to back threes from Spry and another three from Moody and the Eagles found themselves with a 14-0 lead just several minutes into the game. Myers added a three to the first quarter barrage. Seniors Spry and Myers capped off the Eagles opening stanza with a perfectly executed pick and roll and SCA entered the second quarter with a 20-9 lead. Spry lead the quarter in scoring with 11 points. Moody added 6.
Myers kick started the Eagles offense in the second quarter with a three-pointer, a layup followed by another three. He had 8 points in the quarter. Sophomore guard Matthew Fan found his groove, knocking down two three-pointers and getting a layup from a Spry assist on a back door cut. He also scored 8 in the quarter. Junior forward Darius Whitson was everywhere on the court, defending and rebounding while chasing down loose balls and assisting the offense. By the half, Spry lead all scorers with 14 and the Eagles entered the locker room with a commanding 42-27 lead.
In the second half, the Eagles defense absolutely stifled the Falcons offense, allowing just 15 points. SCA challenged every shot and rebounded every miss. The Eagles offense opened the third quarter with a Myers lead pass to a running Whitson for a layup setting the tone as SCA increased their lead. Alchesay had no answer for the SCA offense as the Eagles continued to score on back cut after back cut. Spry added another 8 points to his night while Moody added 4. The Eagles closed the third on top 58-34.
The fourth quarter continued the Eagles domination as the Alchesay crowd sat silent. With two minutes left in the game and the Eagles on top 65-41 Coach Fredericks pulled his starters and the celebration began. The Eagles continued to role to a 72-41 victory and 2a Arizona State Champions!
The Eagles were lead by senior captains and four year starters, Ethan Spry and Reed Myers. Spry finished with 22 points (9-12 fg), 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Myers finished with 14 points (3-6 3fg), 8 assists and 2 steals. Moody added 17 points (3-7 3fg) and Fan 10 points (2-4 3fg). Whitson pulled down 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Eagles run to the state title was characterized by unselfish, well-executed offense and smothering defense. Congratulations and a big thank you to coaches, Bob Fredericks, John Anderson and Paul Clark who worked tirelessly all season and gave so much of themselves to our kids.
Congratulations and thank you to athletic director Eric Dall and his right hand man, Matt Bottoms. Congratulations and thank you to the managers Ryan Brinkman and Tim Remy as well as team mom Laurie Swetonic for keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes and for trainer Tara Lowy for keeping our boys in their best shape. Thank you to the Nest, you are amazing and dedicated fans! And thank you to all the parents for your support and sacrifice. None of this happens without all of you.
But the biggest congratulations goes to our boys who were extraordinary! We are all so proud of and happy for you! You are a special group and you were a joy to watch. Thank you for letting us be a part of the journey.
Yes we are!
