The Pima Roughriders visited Scottsdale Christian Saturday night in what has become, over the last three years, a strong 2a rivalry. The Roughriders brought their signature physical style of half-court basketball to a tightly referee’d game that found multiple players on both teams in early foul trouble. The Eagles responded to the Roughriders half-court game by pushing the ball and pressuring the Pima defense in transition.
In the end, the Roughriders would have no answer for senior forward Ethan Spry, junior guard Jordon Moody and senior point guard Reed Myers who each dominated portions of the game.
The contest began slowly with Pima’s half-court set and several early referee whistles contributing to the game’s slow pace. Junior forward Darius Whitson disrupted the Roughriders offense matching Pima’s physicality on the defensive end while guarding the Roughriders leading scorer. However, the Eagles struggled offensively and at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles found themselves trailing 8-11.
The Eagles quickened the pace in the second quarter with Myers pushing the ball up the court finding open Eagle’s players for easy baskets. The Roughriders had no answer for Spry in the first half who scored 14 of SCA’s 25 points including two three pointers. The Eagles found their offensive groove and ended the half on top 25-24.
The third quarter opened to several early whistles on both teams including a questionable charge call on Spry, sending him to the bench. The Eagles responded with a barrage of three pointers increasing their lead to ten points, 43-33. Moody lead the third quarter charge with 12 points in the quarter including 2 three pointers. Myers and sophomore guard Matthew Fan would each contribute a three-pointer and the Eagles ended the quarter up 45-39.
The game’s pace slowed in the fourth as both teams entered the bonus early. But with the game winding down and the Eagles up by 7 points, the Roughriders would force SCA to win the game at the foul line. They fouled Myers repeatedly who calmly sank 10 of 12 late game free-throws. Myers had14 points in the quarter and the Eagles went on to win the game 61-54.
Myers finished the game with 22 points and 5 assists. Spry added 18 points on 8-12 shooting and Moody contributed 16 points. The Eagles also had strong games from Whitson, Fan and senior big man Luke Swetonic.
SCA extends their record to 3-0 and 1-0 in league play.
The Eagles return to their home court Tuesday night to play 3a rival, the Fountain Hills Falcons at 7pm. Come support your SCA Eagles!
